MEALS AND WHEELS MINISTRY
HISTORY
Begun at St. Paul's in 1982, our Meals and Wheels Ministry is an arm of the interfaith mission of Central Texas Senior Ministry to provide warm, nutritious meals for the Waco-area homebound elderly who are served regardless of their economic circumstances.
At present, St. Paul's is one of 29 sites in the CTSM program, 4 of us cooking in our own site kitchens. We cook for 20 to 30 clients and deliver to these recipients on 3 different routes.
Our cooks require no culinary expertise nor time to plan or shop as our meals are planned by Dorothea Mangum with a careful eye to the special needs of our clients, and the shopping is done by Rita Schormann.
(top)VOLUNTEERS
The cooking is done by teams of 3 to 4 people, both men and women.
The deliveries are made by single drivers, or by friends who choose to participate together, or by family groups. Our drivers are both men and women who may take a lunch break from work or may be "at-home" people.
These volunteers are from St. Paul's and the other 2 Episcopal parishes in Waco and also from the Waco community.
(top)SCHEDULE FOR OUR VOLUNTEERS
Mondays and Wednesdays:
Cooking is in St. Paul's kitchen from 9:00 to 10:45 a.m. once a month.
Deliveries are made from 10:30 to 11:00 a.m. once a month, several times a month, or even once a week, depending on the choice of the driver.
Fridays:
Meals are packaged at St. Alban's Episcopal Church and delivered from that site.
MEALS ON WHEELS AND ST. PAUL'S
St. Paul's location is "important in that many of our clients live near our church,...and we answered a call from the community in the central downtown area," notes Pat High, wife of Bishop Rayford High, who initiated the ministry. These needs and these responses continue today.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Opportunities to participate in this ministry are multiple. Those desiring to participate may call the church office, 753-4501, to make their wishes known.
